Arthritis is a significant issue in New Zealand, costing an estimated $12.2 billion in 2018. These costs include healthcare expenses, lost productivity, and the emotional toll on those living with the condition. It is a widespread issue, affecting 17% of New Zealanders over 15, and for those over 65, more than 45% live with some form of arthritis. With the country’s ageing population, cases are expected to reach 1 million by 2040.
Arthritis not only impacts individuals but also the broader economy, with over $1.2 billion in productivity losses affecting the country’s GDP, and nearly $1 billion spent on healthcare. Additionally, almost $8 billion is attributed to diminished quality of life due to disability and premature death. Given the high prevalence and cost of arthritis, it is crucial to invest in cost-effective interventions like obesity reduction programs, ongoing research, and education around self-management to mitigate the economic and personal impact.
